AERO0023-1  Aircraft design

Duration :  30h Th, 30h Pr
Number of credits :
Master in Aerospatial Engineering, research focus, 1st yearFirst semester5
Master in Aerospatial Engineering, research focus (Thrust), 1st yearFirst semester5
Master in Aerospace Engineering, Professional Focus (Management), 1st yearFirst semester5
Lecturer :  Grigorios Dimitriadis, Ludovic Noels
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Course contents :
During these classes, the students will learn about the integrated design of an aircraft. Indeed, each technical field is seen as a sub-system interacting with the others.

Therefore, the organisation is as follows. An introductive talk describes, through history, these interactions, and a concluding talk will introduce the project of designing an aircraft.

Between these two classes, professors will introduce the concepts of

  • Aerodynamics
  • Structures
  • Propulsion (flow and mechanical design)
  • Performances
  • Stability
  • Aeroelasticity
Learning outcomes of the course :
To acquire the methodology to conduct a conceptual design in aeronautics.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Elementary knowledge in

  • Solid mechanics
  • Fluid mechanics
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Industrial partners are invited to give lectures during which they illustrate the theoretical concepts with realizations of aeronautic companies.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Face to face
Recommended or required readings :
Aircraft Design: Synthesis and Analysis, Ilan Kroo, Stanford University, http://adg.stanford.edu/aa241/AircraftDesign.html (http://adg.stanford.edu/aa241/AircraftDesign.html)
Assessment methods and criteria :
The evaluation is based on a project, which consists in the pre design of a turbojet. This project will be presented in front of the professors and the classmates.
Participation to the talks of the invited lecturers and to the project presentations is mandatory.
Organizational remarks :
Classes are taught during first term; project is accomplished during the 2 terms and is presented during the 2nd term.
