| The course will provide an introduction to Shakespeare's art of pastiche, focusing particularly on those of his texts which self-consciously engage with literary models (euphueism, pastoralism, etc) that he sets out to ridicule or problematize.
The following texts in particular will be discussed in class:
The Sonnets
As You like It
Love's Labour's Lost
Romeo and Juliet |

| The aim is to alert the students to the essentially reflexive (intertextual) nature of all literature, and to examine this in the specific case of a Renaissance author who must be approached with a keen sense of the literary-historical context. A collateral gain will reside in the familiarization with the difficulties of Shakespeare's creative idiom. |

| The Penguin edition of Shakespeare's text will be privileged as far as possible, for the purpose of easier referencing. |

| Assessment will be based on a personal written essay, followed by an oral debriefing with the teacher. |
