Course contents :
part : zooplancton and invertebrates

This part of the course includes an overview of paramount parameters for the development of invertebrates in aquatic ecosystems. Relevant specificities of the main zooplanktonic taxa are reviewed to ensure thorough understanding of the factors that intervene in the management of secondary production in ecosystems and in cultures. Secondary production measurement methods are presented and the last course focuses on methods of invertebrate mass production (especially planktonic biomass) with a special emphasis on nutrient content to optimize fish larvae production and survival

part : fish

Generality and detailed researches on fish biology.

Course objective :
part : zooplancton and invertebrates

The goal of this course is that students acquire thorough knowledge of abiotic and biotic parameters that determine invertebrate production both in natural environments and in cultures.

This course also provides students with an overview and understanding of the main methods available to measure secondary production and to optimize invertebrate production in mass cultures.

part : fish

Oral talk on the biology in fish.

Prerequisites :
part : fish

Bases in general biology
Workshops :
part : zooplancton and invertebrates

Two field days are organized so that students use sampling devices of invertebrates and become familair with the major taxonomical groups both in lotic and lentic ecosustems.

Students observations are used to assess tha water quality of sampled sites.

When possible, a visit to a mass culture production site is organized.

part : fish

Shows in laboratory or on the field.

Organization :
part : zooplancton and invertebrates

Courses are attended at the CEFRA (Tihange).

Field trips and laboratory work will tale plce in Liège (Institute of Zoology and Sart-Tilman campus).

part : fish

Timing established with the students.

Written notes :
part : zooplancton and invertebrates

Course notes are provided at the start of the year together with powerpoint presatations used throughout the quater; references of textbooks are also provided.

part : fish

Document distributed during the course.

Assessment :
part : zooplancton and invertebrates

Examination is organized as a written test.

part : fish

Oral in both sessions
