| Course contents : | Entomology concerns 1 million of known species, 90% of Arthropods and 75% of living animals, the Vertebrates representing a few percents only of the animal Kingdom. Nowadays, few zoologists are able to correctly identify insects species, and to interpret their presence even for a common species. I propose to contribute to fill this gap, presenting the biology of species frequently met in our environment. In frame of the pratical work, I shall favour the study, the conservation and the popularization. |
 |
| Course objective : | General objectives
- To make conrete and useful a basic interest for insects;
- To present the insect's life diversity and the insect's role in the environment.
- To illustrate ecological and behavioural adapatations to explain the constraints of habitat colonisation.
- To favour the study of an insect taxon
- To favour the integration of new zoologists among entomological working groups in Belgium
- To valorise the entomological ressources of the University of Liège Zoological Museum collections
Practical Objectives
- To be able to identify a maximum of common species among the various insect Orders.
- To learn how they live.
- To know where and when looking for insects.
- To know how to prepare dead insects for their conservation in a collection, including the labelling of the specimens.
- To learn how to manage, preserve and valorise an insects collection, inlcuding the encoding in a collection data base.
|
 |
| Prerequisites : | To be able to class any insect in its systematic Order. |
 |
| Workshops : | The aims of the practical part are to valorize the entomological collections of the University Zoological Museum (preparation of insects, sorting, identification, labelling, encoding data in a database) and to used entomological data in the frame of a current research study, in the field or in depositories. |
 |
| Organization : | 6 weekly lectures (2h30x6) for the theory, the same for the workshops. First semestre, on Wednesday : hours to be arranged contacting M. Loneux. |
 |
| Written notes : | No complete course notes edited so far. Powerpoint presentations for the theory part. Some of the chapters are written and edited as photocopies |
 |
| Assessment : | The evaluation is mainly based on the personnal work realised by the student in the frame of the practical part. Examples of work subjects will be suggested at the first lecture. The themes vary every year, pending on the opportunities for a valorisation or the current research work. |
