| Course contents : | The various following items are developped:
A.Introduction, definitions and general statements.
B. Physical parameters: effects of temperature, effects of hydrostatic pressure.
C. Chemical parameters: effects of salinity, oxygen and respiration, effects of pollutants.
D. Perception: chemical perception (including fish migration), physical perception (vibration perception, fish lateral line, electric organs, ...), light perception (including bioelectricity). |

| Course objective : | To better understand how animals perceive their environment and how they adapt to physical and chemical parameters of the marine medium. If the basic approach is mainly cellular and molecular, the organismic aspects are not neglected. |

| Prerequisites : | Basic knowledges in general biology. |
|
| Workshops : | Experiments are focused on various aspects of the life in fluctuating salinity environments and on the effects of temperature and pollutants.
- osmolarity and ions content of body fluids of fish and/or crustaceans exposed to various salinities
- ionic exchanges acros isolated epithelia
- evaluation of filtration activity of mussels as a function of temperature, salinity, presence of pollutants,... |

| Organization : | The Course integrates, as much as possible, theory and practice.
It may be adapted according to special requests of the students. |

| Written notes : | Selected reprints and review articles are offered to the students. |
|
| Assessment : | Evaluation is based on oral exchanges, on the quality of a personnal written investigation on a subject receiving agreement and on the quality of a seminar on that work. |
