| Course contents : | This course consists in a presentation of different groups of marine vertebrates and a number of their particularities as related to environment and mode of life. Introduction: brief presentation of the marine environment. Mammals: an important part of the course covers cetaceans and pinnipeds. Birds. Reptiles: particular attention paid to turtles. Fish: presentation of main groups, and their economic importance. |

| Course objective : | To introduce students to the biology and diversity of marine vertebrates. |

| Prerequisites : | None |

| Workshops : | Visits to museums and to the University aquarium. Stage of four days at the marine biology station of Wimereux (this stage is part of both the a and b sections of the course on benthos and nekton animals), and includes a visit to the fishing port of Boulogne when fish are being unloaded, a visit to a factory where fish are canned, a visit to the Nausicaa aquarium and an examination of animals living in wetlands areas. |

| Organization : | 15h of the theoretical part of the course, 15h of practical work during the first term. Stage during the second term depending on availability of places for field work at the station at Wimereux, and depending on the level of water in tidal wetlands. |

| Written notes : | A syllabus with all pertinent information will be made available in class. |

| Assessment : | A basic oral examination will be arranged by agreement with students. This wil consist of two questions drawn at random by the student. The overall grade will also take into account work done at the Wimereux stage, based on the judgment of the teachers participating in the stage. |
