| Course contents : | The clinical animal production consists of three contexts of clinical activity. The first is that the clinic said individual cases of ruminants (responsible Dr. K. Touati), the second is that of clinical medicine herds (Head Prof. Ch. Hanzen) and the third that of clinical swine ( Responsible: Dr. M. Laitat). These relate to different clinical types of consultation and intervention for individual problems or herds in disciplines relevant to internal medicine, surgery or Theriogenology ruminants and pigs.
 | | Ruminants clinic (individual cases) |

 |
 | The ruminant clinic (individual cases) was organized by the clinical department of production animals. It enables practical training in medecine, surgery and ruminant reproduction. |
 | | Ruminant livestock medicine |

 |
 | The clinic of the ruminant herds medicine is one of three clinics supervised by the department of the production animals. She completes the practical training offered by the individual cases and porcine clinics. |
 | | Swine clinic |

 |
 | Training of students is achieved through practical workshops. |
|
 |
| Course objective : | At this end of this course, you will be able to - collect individual or herd data, - make a general and/or special exam of a cow or a pig - complete correctly and objectively the clinical sheets of the examined animals.
More incidentally, since these objectives are more developped during the third master, the clinical training will make you able to decide on the possible use of additional tests, to develop clinical reasoning to make diagnostic hypothesis in relation with evidence based medicine, to propose a therapeutic strategy to deliver an outcome that takes in account the different clinical signs.
 | | Ruminants clinic (individual cases) |

 |
 | At the end of the week, students should be able to do:
- a complete anamneses
- a complete clinical exam of animals
-determine main clinical signs
-establish a differential diagnosis
-propose complementary exams
- propose a diagnosis
-discuss a possible treatment and management of the case. |
 | | Ruminant livestock medicine |

 |
 | The objectives of this clinic are to make sensitive the students in the herd diagnosis in the context of a more global approach of the problems recovering from the internal medicine, surgery or theriogenology of the ruminants. This approach is completely additional of the individual approach. |
 | | Swine clinic |

 |
 | The Swine clinic has for objectives to familiarize you with the domestic pig while showing you how to approach and manipulate them and even to collect samples. You will learn how to observe pigs as well as possible clinical signs. You will also have to appreciate the quality of their environment. |
|
 |
| Prerequisites : | An active and effective participation of these clinics you require a synthetic knowledge of physiology courses, embryology and gross anatomy and topography of ruminants and swine as well as information provided within the framework of the semiotics of animals during production.
Whereas the real importance of previous knowledge for successful clinical training, testing prerequisites will be organized.
 | | Ruminants clinic (individual cases) |

 |
 | All courses and labs linked to ruminant medecine, surgery and theriogenology acquired the previous years of study. |
 | | Ruminant livestock medicine |

 |
 | The clinical formations presuppose a good synthetic knowledge of physiology, general and topographic anatomy, propedeutics and semiology, nutrition, an,d ethology of the ruminants. |
 | | Swine clinic |

 |
 | Basic notions in:
- anatomy
- semiology
- pharmacology
- surgery
- ecology applied to domestic animals.

-
Practical "Restraint and weight estimation": To initiate students to restraint of pigs. Weight estimation and weighing of growers/finishers and/or sows.
-
Practical "Sampling in pig farms": To initiate students to collect samples (blood samples, swabs,...) from pigs on the field.
-
Practical "Care, surgery and/or blood collection": To initiate students to process newborn piglets, castration, injections and/or blood collection from growing pigs and/or sows.
-
Practical "Climatology": To initiate students to evaluate the quality of climate, to detect abnormalities and suggest simple solutions to correct them.
-
Practical "Semiology" : To initiate students to observe and detect clinical signs in pig farms.

|
 |
| Organization : | The student must assist to the threee different clinics each day between 8h30 and 11 h.
 | | Ruminants clinic (individual cases) |

 |
 | Attendance is obligatory from 8h30 until 11h. |
 | | Ruminant livestock medicine |

 |
 | The week of herds medicine is organized from Monday till Friday from 8:30 am till 11 am in the building adjacent to the porcine clinic (B42). |

 |
 | The clinical teaching concerns the theoretical contents given during the 1st and 2nd graduat in veterinary medicine. |
 | | Swine clinic |

 |
 | Specific notes will be available on myULg. |
|
 |
| Assessment : | The knowledge and activity of the students will be evaluated during the three different clinics.
 | | Ruminants clinic (individual cases) |

 |
 | During the clinical week, all students will be evaluated according to their theoritical knowledge, behaviour and practice.
Their theoretical knowledge is evaluated Thursday with a 5 min. written test based on pre-requisites.
Their behaviour is evaluated according to their motivation, tardiness, equipment and attitude....
Their practice is evaluated at the end of the week by an 10 min. oral test relating to the general exams of the individual cases. |
 | | Ruminant livestock medicine |

 |
 | The clinical activity will be the object of an evaluation of the knowledge (at the beginning of the week), of the knowledge-being (during week) and of the know-how (at the end of week). |
 | | Swine clinic |

 |
 | An evaluation of the knowledge-being, the knowledge and the know-how of each student will occur during the Swine clinic. |

 |
 | Attendance taking in the clinic is automatic. An absence must be communicated by telephone prior to the beginning of the clinic. If it is not communicated it will be considered unjustified, unless it is a very serious matter. Medical (or others)certificates justifying the absence must be turned in to the secretary's office at the RUPO pole. A copy should also be turned in at the FMV administrative secretariat.
Unjustified absences will be taken into account during final deliberation.
Students should have adequate equipment for the ruminant clinic activities. |
 | | Swine clinic |

 |
 | Attendance to Swine clinic is obligatory and will be verified. Students must wear clean and adequate clothes to visit piggeries. |
