Course contents :  Students take part in medical examinations, treatments and necropsies of birds, rabbits and new companion animals sent directly by owners or by veterinarians for specialized examinations
Course objective :  The teaching objectives of the organized clinical activities are:
to train students to the collection of clinical signs in birds, rabbits and NCA;
to develop their diagnosis aptitudes;
to make them establish a vital, economic, sporting or zootechnical prognosis;
to apply treatment and settle preventive measures.
It must be emphasized that most often the diagnosis is based on post-mortem examination.
Farm visits complete this formation

Post-mortem examinations:

  • to settle a differential diagnosis and to determine the cause of death;
  • to confirm or to establish the aetiological diagnosis and to propose the right confirming laboratory technique.
These post mortem examinations are a significant part of students' everyday work.

According to legal limits on farm visits improve this teaching.
Prerequisites :  Notions dedicated to birds, rabbits, and new companion animals that are developed during the theoretical courses from previous years (anatomy, physiology, propaedeutics, parasitology, bacteriology, virology, ...) are of the uppermost importance. A thorough knowledge of the course " Medicine of birds, rabbits and rodents " (VETE0439-1VETE0027-1) is essential.

Assessment :  Permanent evaluation by the staff of the work, the behaviour, the knowledge during the clinic with specific test during the week. This test may happens the first day of the clinic. Students are advised to complete their case knowledge by specific readings.

Students in September retakes will have to spend a week in the clinic at a moment determined by the incumbent (Associated Prof. Dr D. Marlier), possibly during holiday. During this week, the staff will continuously evaluate them.

During visit of farms and/or bird and small mammals rehabilitation centres students must have an irreproachable attitude and behaviour. Failure to respect these indications is enough to get a serious insufficiency (7/20) as final note.

Remarks :  The attendence at the clinic is compulsory. Absences have to be justified by phone at the service and confirmed by an official certificate. Making up of all the absences is compulsory at a moment determined by the incumbent, possibly during holiday.


The unjustified absences will be taken into account at the time of deliberations.
