Intramural clinic

Students are trainbed through consultation and hospitalization of companion animals, most often referred by practitioners. They get involved in pre-surgical patient preparation and actively take part to anaesthesia and surgery.

Oestrsu cycle follow up and infertlity managment is one of the main activitie sof the department

Outpatient clinic

Every morning, groups of students go to different humane socities, to perform electives spays and castrations under the supervision of a scientific collaborator.

Training of students will include management of the preoperative examination, general anesthesia, surgical procedure and postoperative treatments.

Course objective :  
Intramural clinic

Learn how to collect history elements, symptoms in relation to the cycle, pregnancy and pathological disorders of the reproductive system of small animals.
Learn how to analyse data establish a differential to finally reach a diagnosis.
Learn how to establish and administer a treatment aswel as recommend prevention
Get familiar with surgical procedure in reproduction and particluarely with sterilisation techniques in the dog.

Outpatient clinic

The objectives of the ambulatory clinic are:

- to be able to manage successfully general anesthesia

- to be able to perform elective spays and castrations

- to be able to manage postoperative care

Prerequisites :  
Intramural clinic

Notes of lectures about this subject given in 1st and 2nd GMV. Mementos about the Oestrus cycle of the bitch and the unltrasonography of the reproductive system. (available on MyUlg)

Outpatient clinic

Small animal anesthesia (2nd doctorate).

Surgery of the reproductive tract (2nd doctorate)

Workshops :  
Intramural clinic

During the presence in the clinic. Students take part to clinical activities and to seminars organised by the service and more generally by the department.

Every morning a group of 4-6 students will go to animal shelters and perform anesthesia and sterilisations of dogs and cats under the supervisison of a practitioner. Other students are inloved in the clinical activities.

All the students will be following seminars or take part to the clinicalm activities during the afternoon. Practical activities represent 15 hours/student. Presence to the practical activities conditions admission to the final exam. Mainly the practical alectures will concern:

  • semen collection and examination and AI
  • Oestrus cycle follow up
  • Ultrasonography of the reproductive tract
These practical lectures are evaluated.

Outpatient clinic

Every morning (7h30), students go to the humane societies to perform elective spays and castrations under the supervision of a scientific collaborator.

Organization :  
Intramural clinic

A 7 weeks rotation including week-end and night duties is organised betwxeen the different disciplines. Presence is compulsory. Any unjustified absence can condition admittance to the final exam and/or penalize trhe final mark for the subject.

Outpatient clinic

A written evaluation will be made at the beginning of each period. Participation to the ambulatory clinic wil depend on the success of this evaluation. Each student succeding will participate to the ambulatory clinic 3 to 4 times during the week.

Assessment :  
Intramural clinic

Prerequistes will be evaluated on Wednesday afternoon.

The evaluation during the session will consist of a practical part including vaginal or prostatic smears and a part with a written preparation including clinical cases approach. The evaluations of the seminars, prerequistes and performance during the clinic are also part of the final mark for the subject.

Outpatient clinic

A written evaluation will be held at the beginning of each period.

Each student will be evaluated during the week of ambulatory clinic (basic knowledges, tissue handling, motivation, serioussness).

The cotation from the ambulatory clinic will modulate the cotation of the clinic of companion animal reproduction.

Remarks :  
Intramural clinic

Attendance to the clinic activities aswel as to seminars is compulsory and is systematically checked. Any absence should be notified by phone to the service beforehand. If not it will be considered as unjustified except for grave reasons. Medical (or other) certificates will be collected by Nadine Fis with a week of the absence.

Unjustified absence will be considered for admittance to the final exam and/or during deliberations.

Outpatient clinic

Any absence must be justify by phone to the service. If not, it will be considered as an unjustified absence.

Unjustified absence will be taken into account for acceptance to the final examination.
