| Course contents : | Study of domestic animal viral diseases: etiology, pathogenesis, epidemiology, clinical signs, prevention and diagnosis
Introduction, general pathogenesis of viral diseases.
Viral diseases of cattle and small ruminants.
Viral diseases of dogs and cats.
Viral diseases of equids.
Viral diseases of swine.
Viral diseases of poultry and lagomorphs. |

| Course objective : | Its principal objective is to bring the future veterinarian to the understanding of viral diseases according to the interactions between the infecting virus and the infected organism. The focus is done on the pathogenic mechanisms. The course will give to the future veterinarian the opportunity to easily understand emergent viral infections and the new vaccine and therapeutic tools.
The course also pursues other more specific goals with regard to the following fields:
- main properties of the important viral families in relation with the pathogenesis of viral diseases;
- general principles of the pathogenesis of viral diseases;
- the pathogenesis of viral diseases of domestic species from temperate areas;
- general concepts on the important viral diseases in tropical area and wild fauna;
- sampling to perform for serological and virological diagnosis;
- interpretation of laboratory results;
- disease prevention using vaccines while knowing the justification for vaccination protocol. |

| Prerequisites : | The study of viral diseases requires prerequisite knowledge in various fields: general virology, immunology, molecular genetics, cellular biology and general pathology. Indeed the virology and the pathology of the diseases caused by the viruses are at the intersection of various biological and medical disciplines. |

| Organization : | Thirty-two hours of lectures on animal viral diseases in amphitheatre. The lectures are held during the first and the second quadrimester. The lectures are largely illustrated by a computer-assisted presentation. In spite of the high number of students, the interactions with the teacher are wished during the course. Moreover, the teacher is at the disposal of the students to answer the questions at the end of the lecture. |

| Assessment : | The written examination at the end of the year is presented in the following way:
- six open questions on animal viral diseases:
- two with a long answer (5 points per question);
- four with a short answer (2.5 points per question).
