| Course contents : | The course "Pathology of Animal Bacterial Diseases" is subdivided into twelve chapters: - neo/peri- natal diseases - diseases of the digestive tract - diseases of the respiratory tract - diseases of the urinary tract - diseases of the genital tracts - diseases of the nervous system - diseases of muscles, bones and joints - (sub-)cutaneous diseases - diseases of the eye - diseases of the cardio-vascular system - septicaemia - multi-systemic diseases
All bacterial diseases are described following a classical scheme: aetiology, epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical signs, lesions, diagnosis, treatment, prophylaxis, zoonotic potential (public health hazard), notifiable diseases ("police sanitaire").
The first-line animal species are: bovines, dogs, horses and poultry. Second-line animal species are: pigs, small ruminants, cats, rabbits/hares, small rodents, cage birds.

| Course objective : | The objective is to give a description of all these diseases in the view of a bacteriologist. This course is therefore complementary of the course "Veterinary Bacteriology" of the 3rd BAC. This course also represents an introduction to the courses of internal medicine, obstetrics, and even surgery, whose orientations are more "clinical". In each chapter emphasis is put on the bacteriological and "paraclinical" (= related to the laboratory) aspects of the bacterial diseases of animals, so that the students can understand their relationship and complementarity with the "clinical" aspects. |
| Prerequisites : | Absolute prerequisite is the course "Veterinary Bacteriology" of 3rd BAC. The courses of immunology of 3rdBAC and of general pathology, physiopathology and pharmacology of 1st GMV are other prerequisites. |
| Workshops : | During one week the students are taught the basics of the bacterial diagnosis in a routine laboratory (always with reference to the practicals of 3rd BAC). During that week practitioners also give seminars to illustrate some bacterial diseases of the course in a more "clinical"-orientated way. |
| Organization : | 35 hours of ex-cathedra lectures 12.5 hours of practicals and seminars ("module paraclinique") |
| Written notes : | Reference readings
- Students' booknotes in Word available on the internet site of the bacteriology laboratory: http://www2.ulg.ac.be/fmv/bacterio.htm - Power Point slides (without figures and photographs) available on the same internet site
Other readings are books available in the library and/or in the Bacteriology laboratory. For the list of books, please refer to the French version.
| Assessment : | The written examination comprises three parts. Each part accounts for one third of the final note. - a question with a long answer ("question à réponse ouverte longue" or QROL) on a disease concerning one animal species in the orientation chosen by the student for the whole 2nd GMV: large and small ruminants (orientation "Farm Animals"); dogs and cats (orientation "Companion Animals"); horses (orientation "Equidae") - 20 questions with short answers ("questions à réponse ouverte courte" or QROC) with "coefficient de certitude", concerning all diseases of the course - 20 multiple choice questions ("questions à choix multiple" or QCM) with "coefficient de certitude", but without "solutions implicites", concerning all diseases of the course
The practicals ("module paraclinique") are not specifically marked, but the seriousness and investment of the students will be evaluated by the assistant professors. This evaluation can influence the final note of the students. MOREOVER, PROBLEMS like absence with no explanation/justification, inappropriate social behaviour (being rude, sleeping, seating/feet on the tables, being loud, ...) and/or inappropriate behaviour within a bacteriological diagnostic laboratory (eating, drinking, manipulating without elementary carefullness, ...) may forbid the student to presenting the examination during the first period of exams. The list of problems is not exhaustive. |
| Contacts : | Please refer to the French version. |
| Remarks : | This course can not be chosen as "isolated course" by the students of 1stGMV during the academic year 2010-2011. |
