Course contents :  This course presents the characteristics of the domestic animals environment in the specialized breeding systems by showing in what these characteristics can have an influence on their welfare, their health and their level of production.

The course evokes as well the influence of the animal presence on the general quality of the environment.

Common courses

It is divided into two parts.

-The first part deals with general subjects in touch with all the species. It consists of 5 chapters:

1- air pollution level inside the animal houses;

2- the lighting of animal houses, in connection with animal requirements, and the possible sources of noise pollution;

3- waste production and their use;

4- factors interfering with the thermal comfort of animals;

5- the evaluation of buildings heat insulation and ventilation.

-The second part describes the specific modalities of housing the diverse categories of domestic animals and presents the contents of the legislations which relate to it. An approach of each species is presented.

Complement on farm animals housing

Option "Farm animal" : cattle, pig, poultry

The evolution of livestock housing is presented with the legislation on this topic.

The relations between animal housing and animal health, welfare and productivity are presented.

Course objective :  The objective of the course of ecology applied to domestic animals is to supply the useful information so that a veterinarian is capable:

- to analyze the diverse constituents of the environment susceptible to interfere with animal welfare, health and level of production;

- To determine, on the basis of this analysis, if the environment satisfies the animal requirements.
Prerequisites :  
Common courses

some knowledges in chemistry, physics and physiology
Workshops :  Practical exercises integrate the data of the various chapters. They are based on examination of plans of animal houses to be analyzed and to be interpreted.
Organization :  This course, both for the theoretical and the practical parts, is not the object of a presentation in public. It is proposed to every student via an on-line support (WebCT).
Written notes :  A syllabus with 2 volumes is availabe.
Assessment :  written examination (multiple choice)
