Course contents :  Intermediary metabolism of proteins, polysaccharides, lipids and nucleic acids is described, as well as their intrinsic and extrinsic regulations. Metabolism adaptations are also studied at the tissue and organism level. A special chapter deals with the metabolism of the ruminants.
Course objective :  The first objective of the course is to explain how the metabolism of the organism and the different tissues works. The second objective is to give the students the tools to easily understand pathological and clinical biochemistry as well as nutrition courses in masters.
Prerequisites :  Chemistry, biology and biochemistry of bachelor years 1 and 2.
Workshops :  Seminars are organized to help students to understand the theory and resolve problems in relation with the theory. They are compulsory.
Organization :  The courses and the seminars take place from September 2010 to April 2011. The time schedules of courses and seminars are available at the Students' Office and on the website of the faculty.
Written notes :  The notes are available at the "Office des Cours" of the Faculty (Bât. B42) and on the "MyULg" website. The reference book is the "Lehninger: Principles of Biochemistry, Fifth edition", edited in 2008, by David L. Nelson Michael M. Cox, Publisher: W.H. Freeman. This book is available at the library of the faculty and in the Department of Biochemistry.
Assessment :  The evaluation is organized as a 2h written examination: open questions with short answers as wall as true/false propositions covering all courses and seminars.
