VETE0004-3  Biochemistry of Domestic Animals I
Duration :  36h Th, 20h Pr, 24h Mon. WS
Credits/ECTS :
Bachelor in veterinary medicine, 2nd yearToute l'année8
Holder(s) :  Fabrice Bureau
Language :  French language
Course contents :  The chapters of the first part of the course (general Biochemistry) are devoted to the structure and function of the major classes of cellular constituents: water, amino acids and proteins, sugars and polysaccharides, nucleotides and nucleic acids, and fatty acids and lipids. In the second part (molecular biology), the following chapters are considered: biosignaling, oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes, and programmed cell death or apoptosis.
Course objective :  The objective of these lectures is to explain how the collections of inanimate molecules that constitute living organisms interact to maintain and perpetuate life. The course also put the accent on the basic knowledge that is required to understand the course of Pathological Biochemistry and Clinical Biology.
Prerequisites :  Basic knowledge of chemistry, organic chemistry, and biology.
Workshops :  The practices include seminars, oral presentations, and laboratory experiments. They are compulsory and require a clean lab jacket.
Organization :  The time schedules of the theoretical and practical teachings are available on the valves and on the website of the faculty. Any change is announced orally and on the university portal.
Written notes :  The notes are available at the 'Office des Cours de la Faculté de Médecine Vétérinaire' (Bât. B42), on the "MyULG" web site, and on the unit web site (www.fmv-dsfo.ulg.ac.be/biomol/ (http://www.fmv-dsfo.ulg.ac.be/biomol/).)
The reference book is the "Lehninger : Principles of Biochemistry, fifth edition" edited in 2008 by D.L. Nelson and M.M. Cox (W.H. Freeman and Company). This book is available at the library of the faculty of veterinary medicine and in the department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
Assessment :  The evaluation of the students is organised as a 2-hour written examination (open questions with short answers). An oral examination is organised for the practices.
