VEGE0007-1  Bases of phytopathology
Duration :  12h Th, 4h Pr, 8h SEM
Credits/ECTS :
Master in Agricultural Bioengineering, Professional Focus, 1st yearFirst semester2
Master in Chemistry and Bio-industries, Professional Focus, 2nd yearFirst semester2
Required preliminary complements to register in the Advanced Master in Tropical and Subtropical Culture ProtectionFirst semester2
Holder(s) :  Philippe Lepoivre
Language :  French language
Course contents :  1. Losses due to plant diseases in relation with the contemporary evolution of the systems of production
2. The parameters which control the development of viral epidemics
3. The parameters which control the development of bacterial epidemics
4. The parameters which control the development of fungal epidemics
5. The diagnosis of plant pathogens
6. Genetic resistance against plant pathogens
7. Biological control of plant pathogens
8. The impact of the different control methods on the development of the epidemics
9. Case studies presented by groups of students.
Course objective :  The course aims at giving to the students a synthetic view of the specificities of plant pathogens (their biology as well as their interactions with the plants and their environment). The course also presents the approach of the diagnosis as well as the bases of the different control strategies.
After completing the course the student is expected to
1. Understand the specific causes and symptoms of important diseases
2. Identify the different steps of the pathogen cycle targeted by the control strategies
3. Quantify the impact of the different control strategies on the development of the epidemics
4. Evaluate the biological and socio economical constraints on:
- The choice of the existing control methods by growers to ensure a sustainable production
- The feasibility of development of control methods (logical of the developer - chemists, breeders, biotechnologists)
Prerequisites :  Basics in microbiology, plant physiology, genetic crop improvement.
Organization :  Lectures : 12h
