I. Physiology of the central nervous system - basic concepts about CNS organization, neuronal excitability and neurotransmission
II. Elements of general pharmacology
III. Toxicomania - general concepts about reinforcement IV. The monoaminergic systems - anatomical and functional aspects of noradrenergic, dopaminergic and serotonergic systems - Dopamine and the brain reward pathway
V. Drugs acting on monoaminergic systems: psychostimulants - hallucinogens - antidepressants - antipsychotics
VI. Caffeine
VII. Cholinergic systems and nicotine
VIII. GABAergic systems and anxiolytics, hypno-sedatives (benzodiazepines and barbiturates)
IX. Cannabis
X. Opioid systems and opioid drugs
XI. Ethanol
XII. Inhalants
Course objective :  The aim of "Introduction to addiction and addictive drugs" is to give a good understanding of the "desired" and "unwanted" psychological and physical effects of the main addictive substances as well as a good insight into the mechanisms involved in these effects
