| Course contents : | Economic and social geography section
The conference will address relationships between the organisation of urban space and mobility. The main elements tackled will be as follows: geographical specificity of urban spatial organisation, the role of the speed of mobility on the shape of towns, the role of the development of space on transport and questions of energy.
Physical geography section
The conference will look at climate change on Earth (both provoked and unprovoked by mankind), and according to various aspects including planetary, hemispheric, continental and regional, quaternary, historical, current or future.
Geomatic section
How can a GPS guide us towards a specific address and, more fundamentally, how can it tell us where we are on the surface of the Earth? What are the co-ordinate systems and reference points used in specifying our position? What is the role of satellite positioning and how relevant are other geomatic disciplines such as digital cartography?
Geology section
General constitution of the Earth. Composition of the lithosphere and plate tectonics. The creation of oceans and mountains. The evolution of species. Fossils, the witnesses to species evolution, and using rock dating. Oil formation. Images of the geological history of Belgium: paleogeography, paleoclimates and ancient life. |

| Course objective : | Economic and social geography section
The main objective is to illustrate on the one hand, the basic concepts of economic and social geography and, on the other, the spatial dimension of socio-economic issues.
Physical geography section
Analysis of graphic and cartographic documents in relation to recent, current and future fluctuations in climatic factors and variables within the atmosphere and the surface of the Earth. Comparison before and after the Industrial Revolution.
Geomatic section
Introduction to geographic references and co-ordinate systems (geoide, geodesic and cartographic systems), to satellite positioning (GPS) and digital cartography.
Geology section
Basic understanding of geology and palaeontology. |

| Prerequisites : | Economic and social geography section
No prior knowledge is required for this course other than that expected of a student with a secondary school diploma choosing a scientific university education. Some understanding of economic and social issues is nonetheless desirable.
Physical geography section
The conference does not require any knowledge other than that expected of a student following a scientific university education.
Geomatic section
Basic understanding of geometry, trigonometry and physics.
Geology section
Basic understanding of chemistry, physics and biology. |
