STAT0750-2  Multivariate statistical analysis
Duration :  20h Th
Credits/ECTS :
Master in Biology of organism and ecology, in-depth approach, 2nd yearToute l'année2
Holder(s) :  Adelin Albert
Language :  French language
Course contents :  The course is a general introduction to the descriptive methods and tests used in multivariate statistics, i.e. the study of several variables simultaneously. The course entails the following chapters:

- Short review of matrix calculus

- Graphical display of multivariate data

- Mean vector and dispersion matrix

- Principal component analysis

- Multiple regression and correlation

- Logistic and ordinal regressions

- Survival curves and Cox regression

- Discriminant analysis
Course objective :  The course is an introduction to the methods of multivariate data analysis. At the end of the course, the sudent should be capable of defining a multivariate problem, analysing the data and interpreting the results. He/she should also be able to understand the use of multivariate methods in the scientific literature.
Prerequisites :  A good knowledge of univarite statistical methods.
Workshops :  The practical sessions consist in analysing mulltivariate datasets by means of the software package Statistica.
Organization :  Each course consists of 1h30 of theory and 1h of exercises with Statistica. One lecture will be dedicated to Statistica (the corresponding manual has also to be acquired for 10 EUR). The homeworks can be completed at home by the student.
Written notes :  Students will have to buy the lecture notes "Multivariate statistical analysis", A. Albert, edition 2008" at Pr Albert's office at CHU for 15 EUR. This book contains the course material as well the main statistical tables. It will be used during exercise sessions and at the final examination. Finally, it can be used as a reference book in multivariate statistics in subsequent years, in particular for the final project.

Textbooks are:
- Multivariate statistical methods. D. Morrison, Mc Graw-Hill, Auckland, 1986
- Introduction to multivariate analysis. C. Chatfield et A.J. Collins, Chapman and Hall. ed, London, 1980
Assessment :  Written examination.
