Course contents :  This introductory course to sociology is designed for students in the preparatory year of the human and social sciences.
Course objective :  The main objective of the course is to enable students to master the basic concepts of the discipline

Workshops :  None
Organization :  The course is organised in seven two-hour sessions, during which the teacher proposes to retrace the main stages of sociological thought, while striving to analyse and articulate different trends and sociological paradigms. Two cross-cutting questions structure this course: the question of rationality and that of developing into modern societies.

Course outline:

Introduction. What is sociology ? (session 1).

First part. The "founders": contribution sociology made to the problem of rationality.

Ch. 1. 1. French sociology, E. Durkheim and the problem of solidarity (session 2)
Ch 2. German sociology, M. Weber and rationalisation (session 3)
Ch. 3. American sociology, G.H. Mead (session 4).

Second part. Analysis and overview: the question of becoming modern societies.

Ch. 4. Functionalist sociology of T. Parsons (session 5)
Ch. 5. The civilisation process of N. Elias (session 6).

Summary and preparation for the examination (session 7)
Written notes :  In terms of learning materials, students will mainly rely upon a portfolio of reading compiled by the teacher.
Assessment :  Assessment of the students' work will consist of an oral examination based on the course.
