RECH0012-1  Research Seminar of Operations Research
Duration :  30h Th
Credits/ECTS :
Master in management Sciences, professional focus in management, 2nd yearToute l'année4
Master en ingénieur de gestion, à finalité spécialisée en Modélisation et technologie, 2nd yearToute l'année4
Holder(s) :  Yves Crama
Language :  English language
Course contents :  The seminar contains several independent parts dealing with specialized topics in operations research, that are examined both from a practical and from a theoretical point of view. The selection of topics is quite flexible and may depend on the audience (previous education, research interests, personal involvement) and on other factors (current research projects of the lecturer, input from outside lecturers, from companies, etc.).
For illustration, topics covered in previous years included:
- advanced topics in linear programming: duality theory, column generation, decomposition techniques, interior point methods, ...;
- combinatorial optimization: shortest paths, minimum spanning trees, matchings, network flow problems, ...;
- fundamental models of game theory, social choice and decision theory;
- location theory and other supply chain models.
Course objective :  This research seminar is intended for doctoral and advanced master students who either plan to specialize in operations research, or who expect to make significant use of OR and related quantitative methods as part of their research activities.
Its aim is to
  • introduce the students to new OR models and techniques;
  • offer a research forum where the students can present their own research work and submit it to their peers' criticisms.
Prerequisites :  At least one introductory OR course and a solid background in mathematics (analysis, linear algebra, probability theory).
A strong motivation for self-study and intellectual challenges.
Organization :  Individual reading, homeworks and discussion of material in class.

Oral presentations by the students.
Written notes :  Material will be distributed in class.
Assessment :  There is no final exam for this course.

Your final grade will be based on several elements : the evaluation of your involvement (presence, quantity and quality of interventions), grading of homework exercises and of the oral presentations (content and form).
