| Course contents : | The first part allows the students to practicaly manipulate different insect pests from temperate and tropical origins (such as the tropical quarantine species for Europe). Some insects are previously prepared and others are conditioned by the students themselves. The aim is to set the students in practical situations to identify potential important pest species based on morphological characters.
The second part aims to present the available molecular techniques to identify pest species, including : - the DNA extraction methods, - the application of RADP, SSR, microsatellites, ADN mitochondrial,..methods for insect identification when morphological characters are not available. |
 |
| Course objective : | Investigation and identification of the economical insect and acari pests based on morpholgical and molecular characters After completing the course the student is expected to - use in a practical way the knowledge in morphological systematic previously studied in order to identify the main pests in temperate versus tropical regions, - use the suitable insect sampling techniques on whole plants or in stored products (fruits, vegetables, seeds) and apply suitable conservation methods for collected insects, - prepare the insects for morphological identification, - use molecular methods for insect identification when morphological characters are not sufficient and integrate in decison systems |
