PHYS2020-1  Physics 1 : Mechanics
Duration :  20h Th, 20h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
Bachelor in engineering sciences, civil engineer orientation (Bachelor in engineering sciences, civil engineer orientation), 1st yearFirst semester4
Holder(s) :  Hervé Caps
Language :  French language
Course contents :  Outline

- Introduction to physical dimensions and variables
- 1D motion
- 2D-3D motions
- Force
- Work done by a force, Energy
- Momentum and collisions
- Rotations
- Angular momentum
- Static equilibrium
- Gravitation
- Oscillations
Course objective :  The aim of the lectures is to give the students a basic knowledge on physical mecanics. Focus is put on an intuitive and phenomenological presentation in order to devlop some physical sense. This organisation is supposed to facilitate the access to more complete formalism during the following years of studies.
Prerequisites :  Elementary skills on mathematics and physics at the level of secondary school.
Workshops :  Laboratory experiments as well as series of exercices are organized. These activities take place with smaller groups for encouraging the inter-activity.
Organization :  A total of 20h of theoretical lectures and 20h of exercices/laboratories is planned. Theoretical lecures are ex cathedra and mainly concern the explanation of fundamental concepts. During training meetings, this theoretical knowledge is applied. In both types of lessons, a special care is taken for emphasizing the role played by the different concepts in the work of engineers. Lectures are organized during the first half of the academic year. Due to technical reasons on the Faculty side, some time delay can be observed bewteen laboratory exercices and their explanation during theoretical talks.
Written notes :  Physics for Engineers and Scientists by Serway and Jewett (available at AEES)

Laboratory notes (available at AEES)

PDF files of the different slides are freely downloadable on the internet (www.grasp.ulg.ac.be) and copies are available via AEES.
Assessment :  Written evaluation on January. Theoretical concepts and exercices are asked.
