Credits/ECTS :
Bachelor in physics, 3rd yearFirst semester9
One-year preliminary programme leading to the Master in Space SciencesFirst semester9
Holder(s) :  part a) Electronic and instrumentation : Ngoc Duy Nguyen
part b) nuclear detection : David Strivay
Language :  French language
Course contents :
part a) Electronic and instrumentation

Semiconductor physics fundamentals. Electronic devices : pn junction, Schottky diode, bipolar transistor, field-effect transistor. Circuit analysis, transfer function, frequency response. Operational amplifier et basic circuits. Introduction to digital electronics : numbers, logic gates, boolean algebra, combinatory logic circuit design, sequential circuits. Converters. Introduction to instrumentation.

part b) nuclear detection

This course introduces the interaction of radiation with matter. Then, the general characteristics of the detectors are presented (resolution, dead time,...).
The different types of detectors are explained: ionization chamber, charged particle detectors, X-ray and gamma-ray detectors, and neutron detectors.

Course objective :
part a) Electronic and instrumentation

To introduce the basics of device physics and to present applications in analog electronics and digital electronics.
Workshops :
part a) Electronic and instrumentation

Drill sessions (problem solving) and lab sessions (mounting and analysis of analog and digital circuits).

part b) nuclear detection

Practicals on the operation of detectors and their associated electronics.

Organization :
part a) Electronic and instrumentation

The course is scheduled for the first quadrimester. For the lab sessions, groups of two students have to be formed.

part b) nuclear detection

Practicals are done by groups of two students.

Written notes :
part a) Electronic and instrumentation

Copies of slides and additional written notes. Reference textbooks will be mentioned by the teacher.

part b) nuclear detection

Copies of the slides and a syllabus are given.

Assessment :
part a) Electronic and instrumentation

An oral examination on the content of the lectures, written exercise(s) and lab practise.

part b) nuclear detection

The exam has theoretical and practical parts.
