Course contents :  This course gives an introduction into electromagnetism and thermodynamics for mathematics students.

This course gives an introduction into electromagnetism for mathematics students.

part b) Thermodynamics

This course gives an introduction into thermodynamics for mathematics students.

Course objective :  Topics of the electrodynamics part of the course:
- vector analysis
- Maxwell's equations
- electrostatics
- electromagnetic waves
- electromagnetic fields generated by moving particles

Topics of the thermodynamics part of the course:
- ergodicity, irreversibility, and the arrow of time
- statistical ensembles
- the principles of thermodynamics
- ideal gases
- interacting gases and phase transitions

Prerequisites :  basic knowledge of analysis in several dimensions and of classical mechanics

Workshops :  Regular homework (once per week) will have to be done and submitted.
An exercise class will be organized in which homework exercises are discussed and corrected. Students are encouraged to present their solutions on the blackboard.

Organization :  This course will take place within 15 sessions à 2 hours (8 sessions for electromagnetism and 7 sessions for thermodynamics).

part b) Thermodynamics

This course will take place within 7 sessions à 2 hours.

Assessment :  Assessment will be done to a large extent (85% of the total grade) by a written exam (3 hours) and to a small extent (15% of the total grade) on the basis of weekly homework exercises.
