Course contents :  Biophotonics is the application of light to biology, from diagnostics to medical treatment. It is a pluridisciplinary scientific field including physics (lasers,...), chemistry (spectroscopies,...), biology, medicine and engineery (characterisation tools). Biophotonics is more and more important for biotechnological and medical applications. It is therefore essential to propose an introductory course.

Biophotonics is a rather large field. It is therefore impossible to cover it within 20h. We will focus on aspects which seem the more interesting: light - biological matter interactions, optical spectroscopies and their applications, lasers in biology and medicine, photobiology, optical imagery, optical biosensors, light as a therapeutic tool and bionanophotonics.
Course objective :  The aims of the course are :

- Understand light-biological matter interaction;

- Initiate the students to optical technical applied to biological materials;

- Show some therapeutic applications of light.

At the end of the course, the student would have acquired the required knowledge to apprehend with serenity future practical applications.
Prerequisites :  - Physics and biology elementary bachelor degree courses.
Workshops :  - Laboratories (depending on students number) - Visits of laboratories using the teaching optical methods
Organization :  The course will be taught in the second term.
Written notes :  Copies (PDF) of the powerpoint slides.
Assessment :  - Theory : oral exam during official sessions

- Practice : reports

Laboratory reports are quoted; the quotation is taken at a level of 1/3.
