PHYS0957-1  Physics of Fluids
Duration :  20h Th, 10h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
Bachelor in physics, 2nd yearSecond semester3
Holder(s) :  Hervé Caps
Language :  French language
Course contents :  Table of contents
- physical concept of fluid
- cinematics
- dynamics
- laws of conservation
- fluid flows at low and high Re
- dimensional analysis
- instabilities
Course objective :  The lecture will aim to give the student the physical and mathematical basis for understanding phenomena dealing with fluids. Physical concepts providing a macroscopic description of the fluid will be presented. The classical laws for the fluid motion will then be derived. A special attention will be paid on a physical and intuitive description of the different phenomena. Within this context, dimensional analysis will be introduced and used, among others, in the case of fluid instabilities.
Prerequisites :  Good methematical and physical basis of one year in physical sciences is recommanded.
Workshops :  Following the theoretical lectures, practicle examples will be solved in classroom.
Experiments emphasizing the fluid behavior in different context will be performed : rheological fluids f.ex.
Organization :  The lecture is organized at the second semester.
Written notes :  See the website of the professor.
Assessment :  Oral/written exam.
