Course contents :  Non-discrimination and equality
The concept of discrimination has acquired the status of a frame of both public policy of governments and claims of the civil society in the order of discours. The "fight against discrimination" seems to take over from the "struggle for equality." The seminar will aim to examine the meanings attached to the principle of non-discrimination and identify the relationship they have with the principle of equality. In order to do so, we will, on the one hand, outline the meaning of the term in classical Greek thought, in modern political thought (Hobbes, Rousseau), in the context of post-revolutionary thought (Hegel, Marx) and finally in contemporary interpretations of "political philosophy » (Balibar, Rancière). On the other hand, several sessions will be devoted to theoretical (philosophical, legal, sociological and anthropological) issues and practices in the fight against discrimination. We will examine to what extent the principle of non-discrimination is the contemporary translation of the egalitarian affirmation of the Declaration of Human Rights and the Citizen, and if it exhausts or not the meaning of this egalitarian claim.
