MECA0470-1  Alternative numerical methods in continuum mechanics
Duration :  30h Th, 30h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
Master in Engineering Physics, in-depth approach, 2nd yearToute l'année5
Holder(s) :  Ludovic Noels
Language :  French language
Course contents :  This course has the puropose of presenting new numerical methods under development. Apart from the theoretical presentation of these methods, the goal pursued by these new developments, their state-of-the-art, and the future challenges are discussed. Among these methods, one can find
  • Meshless methods
  • Extended finite element methods (XFEM)
  • Discontinuous Galerkin methods
  • SPH
  • Homogenization
  • Etc
Course objective :  The student will be able to understand and to code a new numerical method from literature content.
Prerequisites :  Advanced knowledge in

  • Solid mechanics
  • Fluid mechanics
  • Finite-element method
Workshops :  Study of a new numerical method, with as a basis, papers from the literature.
Organization :  After some introductive lectures about new and old numerical methods, literature papers will be distributed to the students for them to study a new numerical method.
Written notes :  Reading material on WebCt (http://www.webct.ulg.ac.be/webct/logon/117195331001.)
Assessment :  Evaluation is based on a project, which consists in the presentation and the implementation of one of the recently developed numerical methods. Literature papers will be the basis of this project.
