MECA0137-1  Non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics
Duration :  30h Th, 30h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
Master in Engineering Physics, in-depth approach, 2nd yearToute l'année5
Holder(s) :
Substitute(s) :  Vincent Terrapon, Benoît Debbaut
Language :  French language
Course contents :  Description of basic properties of viscoelastic or memory fluids. Recalls of tensorial description of kinematics ans stresses. Rheology of generalised Newtonian fluids. Linear and non-linear viscoelasticity, with presentation of current differential models as well as of their properties. Short introduction to rheometry. Presentation of mathematical tools and numerical methods, in particular the finite elements methods for the simulation of steady and transient free surface flows.
Course objective :  Acquire the basic knowledge and an appropriate methodology for the understanding, description and simulation of mechanisms encountered in laminar flows of memory fluids.
Prerequisites :  Mathematical analysis,
Continuum mechanics,
Basics of finite element method.
Workshops :  A few exercises are performed by the lecturer on the blackboard. A homework is also given to the students; this work whose duration is about eight hours, is performed by groups.
Organization :  Whenever possible, the organisation of the course is done in agreement with the students.
The first part, tought by B. Debbaut, is dedicated to rheology of viscoelastic fluids, and requires twenty-five teaching hours, possibly spread over four days. This part includes a few exercises solved by the lecturer on the blackboard. A visit of an industrial laboratory of rheology is also held.
The second part, tought by J.M. Marchal, is dedicated to specific questions on finite elements for free surface flows, and requires fifteen teaching hours, spread over four half-days.
Written notes :  Training notes are published by the teachers.
Assessment :  Oral examination.
