| MECA0058-1 | Fracture mechanics, damage and fatigue
| Duration : | 30h Th, 30h Pr |
| Credits/ECTS : |
| Holder(s) : | Ludovic Noels |
| Language : | French language |
| Course contents : | The course presents the basis of fracture mechanics. Failure of structures is explained by studying the physic of materials. This behavior is then modeled analytically. Finally numerical methods used in fracture mechanics are presented.
Subjects covered by the lectures are
- Linear elasticity of fracture mechanics (LEFM)
- Non-linear fracture mechanics (NLFM)
- Fatigue
- Design approaches
- Recent numerical approaches
| Course objective : | Through a deep understanding of the theory and the realization of a project, the student will be able to apply numerical tools to design structures and study crack propagation problems. |
| Prerequisites : | Elementary knowledge in
- Solid mechanics
- Finite-element method
| Workshops : | Exercises with TA and personal project. |
| Written notes : | Reading material on WebCt (http://www.webct.ulg.ac.be/webct/logon/117191906001.) |
| Assessment : | Evaluation is based on the realization of a project related to the use / development of numerical methods specific to fracture mechanics and on an examination. |
