MECA0038-1  Measurement uncertainties and dimensional metrology
Duration :  30h Th, 30h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
Master in Mechanical Engineering, in-depth approach, 1st yearFirst semester5
Master ingénieur civil mécanicien, à finalité spécialisée en technologies durables en automobiles, 1st yearFirst semester5
Master in Mechanical Engineering, specialized approach, 1st yearFirst semester5
Holder(s) :  Maarten Arnst
Language :  French language
Course contents :  Definitions and significance of several concepts (true value, errors, uncertainty...)
Expression and evaluation of uncertainties according to GUM. Type A and B uncertainties. Practical examples of calculation.

Abbe principle. Traditional versus 3D Metrology. Influence parameters of measurement result (temperature, instrument, method, surroundings...).
Conformity checking of a mechanical part to its design specifications.
Mathematical measurement data processing. SPC (Statistical Process Control).

Practical exercises on the use of measurement instruments and their sources of uncertainties.
Course objective :  Uncertainties of measurement : the aim is to give
- a complete information about the expression of a quality measurement result,
- a reliable method (from GUM: Guide for the expression of Uncertainties in Measurement) for international comparisons of physical measurements, such weight, pressure, time...

Dimensional Metrology : the aim is to give theorical and practical knowledge in order to understand the physical meaning of a geometrical measurement result.
A special attention is turned to the verification of mechanical parts (e.a. respect of tolerancies).
Prerequisites :  Statistical methods. Geometrical tolerancing.
Technical drawing.
Workshops :  Exercises about metrological instruments and measuring methods : internal diameter, threading,.... Tridimensional control
Organization :  from october to december
