MECA0035-1  Lubrification and tribology
Duration :  30h Th, 30h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
Master in Mechanical Engineering, in-depth approach, 2nd yearFirst semester5
Holder(s) :  Jean‑Luc Bozet
Language :  French language
Course contents :  Starting from the analysis of the Stribeck curve, we can study the different lubrication regimes (dry, boundary, hydrodynamic, hydrostatic, elastohydrodynamic) and the associated concepts (viscosity, Reynolds equation,...) which allow by an appropriate choice of material, surface treatment, oil, grease,... to try to control the friction and wear phenomena. Two projects, the first being the study of the squeeze film, the second being the study of the thermal behaviour of a lubricated ball bearing allow to practice the theoretical concepts of the course.
Course objective :  Overview of the various types of bearings and lubrication modes: hydrodynamic, hydrostatic and elastohydrodynamic, as well in stationary regime as in non-stationary. Study of basic rheology of greases.
Prerequisites :  MECA 0011-1 ; MECA 0049-2
Workshops :  The two last hours are devoted to the resolution of traditional problems inspired of the industrial experiment of laboratory EMT of Tribology.
Organization :  Course organized in 4 hours units: 2 hours of course, 2 hours of practice.
Written notes :  Document available from AEES/ULg
Assessment :  1 evaluation during practice; 1 evaluation during an oral examination
