| Course contents : | This course will offer the opportunity to study speech representation in 17th and 18th century french literature through the examination of a variety of novels and dialogues. Possible authors to be explored include Charles Sorel, La Mothe Le Vayer, Fénelon, Fontenelle, Crébillon, Marivaux, Voltaire and Diderot. |

| Course objective : | The 17th and 18th century french literature is the home of changes in speech representation in fiction, while dialogue as a genre produces several masterpieces. The aim of the course is to enable students to study different important examples, in such way they can properly be understood in their literary context. Students will also gain the techniques and tools necessary to analyse dialogue and represented speech in fiction. |

| Assessment : | Oral examination : questions dealing with the topics studied and one essay question on one text, prescribed or not, as students are positively encouraged to develop their own interests and to read authors of their choice. |
