Course contents :  Presentation of and lectures on foundational texts in Spanish literature (in French translation), from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. Commentary and critical analysis of required texts, placing them in relation to their historical and social context.
Course objective :  To develop a critical and attentive reading that will allow students to understand and ideally to participate in the philological and critical discussion concerning masterpieces of Spanish literature. Introduction to certain concepts from narratology and social criticism.
Prerequisites :  Prior completion of the course in the History of Spanish Literature is highly recommended. In order to understand certain questions and references students should possess at least an intermediate understanding of Spanish language.
Workshops :  Exercises to be done (critical syntheses and essays concerning texts we will be reading) will be assigned at appropriate times.
Organization :  This course meets for four hours per week during an entire semester, and about half the meetings will be devoted to working on exercises.

Assessment :  Reading exercises and a written exam.
