Course contents :  The aim of this course is to discover linguistic aspects of mediaeval Latin. The course will be based on extracts from works written during different centuries and from regions featuring different textual languages (Belgium, Occitan and the langue d'oïl in France, Germany, Spain, Ireland, etc.).
The works which will be studied - travel narratives, historical chronicles, wildlife stories, tales, bestiaries, exempla, the lives of saints - will be studied in themselves but will also be linked with vernacular mediaeval literature.
Course objective :  To discover mediaeval Latin literature from the Middle Ages through extracts from works from different eras, regions and genres. To reflect upon the relationship between works written in Latin and those written in the vernacular.
Prerequisites :  Basic knowledge of classical Latin.
Workshops :  Weekly translations.
Organization :  Duration and period: 1st quadr., 45 hours.
Place and hours of teaching : pl. Cockerill, on Wednesday, from 11 am till 12:30 am and Thursday from 8 am till 9:30 am.

Assessment :  Oral exam in January
