Course contents :  
  • Theories of signification; semiotics of discourse
  • Operational concepts: grammars and their components (semantics, syntax, semantics, pragmatics); the sign; the concept of opposition and the semiotic square; semantic models (dictionary, encyclopaedia) and the generative trajectory of the contents; code and system.
  • Enunciation and utterance.
  • Analysis of visual texts
  • Rhetoric: languages in action; the figure.
Course objective :  
  • To provide an introduction to the subject of semiotics as the science of signs and signification, by paying particular attention to the relationship between verbal language and visual language.
  • To give students tools to analyse and interpret verbal and visual languages.
  • To open their minds to rhetoric, which examines the social dynamics of codes, for instance in advertising.
Prerequisites :  None (introductory course).
Organization :  Duration and period: 30 hours in the 1st quadrimester.
Place and times: G. Kurth room, Fridays from 14:30 to 17:00, 30 hours in total.
Written notes :  J.-M. Klinkenberg, Précis de sémiotique générale, Paris, Le Seuil, 2000 (except for chapter 7 and 9).

D. Bertrand Précis de sémiotique littéraire, Paris, Nathan, 2000 (only chapters 3 and 4).

J.-M. Floch, Identités visuelles, Paris, P.U.F., 1995 (only three chapters: "Deux jumeaux si différents, si semblables", "La voie des logos", "La liberté et le maintien").
Assessment :  Assessment consists of a written exam. The exam has 6 to 8 open questions plus a text analysis (literary, photographic). Emphasis is not on the ability to reproduce the subject word for word, but on understanding and applying one's knowledge. Students may consult their corrected papers in the course leader's office.
