Partim : Latin palaeography

Survey of the history and the typology of the Latin writing, from the Antiquity to the 15th century, based upon Roman documents and literary manuscripts.

Partim : Greek palaeography

Survey of the history of the ancient Greek alphabet, early books (with a short introduction to codicology) and libraries. Typology of the ancient Greek writing, with reference to the cultural impact of writing in the ancient Greek civilization.

Course objective :

To identify, date and decipher the writing of ancient documents (papyri, writing tablets, graffiti) and of literary manuscripts.

To decipher the writing of Greek literary manuscripts

Prerequisites :
