Holder(s) :  Bruno Rochette
Language :  French language
Course contents :  A series of texts illustrating a theme, a character or a classical author. In 2005-2006: choice of texts by Seneca. In 2006-2007: Lucretius. In 2007-2008: Titus Livy, the origins of Rome. In general, a prose writer one year and a poet the next.
Course objective :  To show the various audiences concerned how a commentary, whether historical or literary, can only be based on direct contact with the text, hence on a precise understanding and rigorous translation.
Prerequisites :  Good knowledge of basic Latin, i.e. the contents of a common school grammar book (or the Latin method of FAMERIE - BODSON- DUBUISSON, published by Nathan) and a vocabulary book (for instance by G. ETIENNE [approximately 2000 words]).
It should be stressed that "six years of Latin in secondary school" does not give automatic access to this course: everything depends on the student's real knowledge and his/her true capacity to mobilise it. It should also be stressed that this course is not compulsory for students in the first year of their bachelor's degree (except in classics) and there is no shame in choosing the Beginner's Latin course.
Workshops :  Practice sessions (answers to questions asked by the students) are regularly organised with the help of a student/monitor. For the schedule and general information on the course, see http://www.ulg.ac.be/littlat
Organization :  On Monday from 4 to 5:30, all year.
See http://cipl82.philo.ulg.ac.be/horaires
Written notes :  - Reference works: a set of texts is available from the Langues et Littératures Classiques secretariat every year. Students should also obtain: F. GAFFIOT, Le grand Gaffiot. French-Latin dictionary (Hachette) [full version] ; G. FRANÇOIS, Grammaire latine, Dessain.
Compulsory reading:
1 Bac (all): G.-A. Pauliat-M. Pauliat, Civilisations grecque et romaine.
2 Bac history: L. Jerphagnon, Histoire de la Rome antique. Les armes et les mots [a chapter of student's own choice].
2 Bac other sections: R. Martin-J. Gaillard, Les genres littéraires à Rome [a chapter of student's own choice].
- Recommended reading: indicated in class.
Assessment :  Oral exam in June: reading aloud one of the passages explained in class, retranslation, grammatical justification, commentary; a question on civilisation (on the work of Pauliat).
