Course contents :  This course aims to develop the students' skills in spoken scientific English (namely their note-taking and responding ability in lectures in the field of biomedical sciences) .

It is an advanced ESP course (CEFRL levels C1 for listening and note-taking skills, B2 for speaking).
Course objective :  The purpose of this course is to teach the students how to take notes efficiently during a scientific lecture in English in order to

(1) be able to answer accurate questions and/or

(2) respond on the subject of the lecture in English.
Prerequisites :  Pratique de l'Anglais Scientifique I (compulsory scientific English course in 3rd year of the Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Sciences) or equivalent (e.g. IELTS 6 or Cambridge Advanced English A- C).
Organization :  The course is comprised of:

  • 5 hours of theory on academic note-taking in a foreign language taught to all students together,
  • workshops (25 hours in all) in which the students will attend actual on-line and real lectures and take notes on the basis of which they will have to answer questions, provide syntheses and/or ask relevant questions. These workshops will be taught by researchers from the Faculty of Medicine.
Written notes :  The theoretical introduction to the course will be posted online and part of it will be handed out on the first class day.
Assessment :  Exam in January. It consists in a listening comprehension and note-taking exercise on the basis of a scientific lecture.
