| Course contents : | This makes up the first part of the course for Information and Communication students (continued in the second year).
The course as well as the various learning activities in class, aim at activating the knowledge students have acquired in high school and at preparing them to use the English language in an active way.
The course is based on the study of different modules from the coursebooks. Students must prepare actively and regularly at home for the weekly class. Presence and participation are necessary and will be taken into account in the final mark.
The book includes the four main language skills (writing, reading, speaking and listening) as well as grammar and vocabulary in use. Students will be expected to do the langue exercises in the workbook.

| Course objective : | - Revision and enrichment of the basic and specific English vocabulary as well as of its appropriate use.
- Reading comprehension: understanding texts, summarizing the information, reacting to the content.
- Revision and extension of essential grammar principles and rules. |

| Prerequisites : | Basic knowledge of the English vocabulary and grammar (high school level). |

| Organization : | In addition to the two-hour per week class, students are expected to work another 2 to 4 hours on their own (preparation of the different modules in the coursebook and exercises in the workbook). |

| Assessment : | Exams:
The examination consists of two compulsory parts that cannot be separated. Students who fail in the first session will have to retake both exams.
- a written exam based on both the coursebook and the workbook.
- an oral examination based on the subjects covered in the coursebook and a selection of three articles (minimum five pages) from the readings file.
Classwork:
Participation as well as the mid-term quiz and any other assignments will be taken into account in the final mark. Students who, for some VALID reason, can't come to class regularly must get in touch with their teacher as soon as possible.
Final mark:
- written exam : 8 points - oral exam : 6 points - listening comprehension: 2 points - class work: 4 points |
