| Course contents : | This course is based on the study of the language and vocabulary specific to sociology and human sciences as well as on academic skills such as note-taking, summarizing, paraphrasing and presenting content.
The CEFRL objective level of the course is C1 in all four language skills. |

| Course objective : | This 45-hour course aims at the continued improvement of the four basic skills, namely listening, reading, speaking and writing, particularly in the context of the academic study of sociology. |
 |
| Prerequisites : | This is an upper-intermediate to advanced level course (CEFRL C1). The level required to take this course is intermediate to upper-intermediate (CEFRL B2), which corresponds to the level of the Level-2 English course (LANG0003). |
 |
| Organization : | The class is taught for three hours every week in the first semester.
Attendance is essential. Preparation and participation in class will count for a percentage of the final mark in the first session. Regular quizzes will be organised to that end. |
 |
| Written notes : | Students will need a copy of the fifth edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association and a copy of the third edition of J. Macionis and K. Plummer's Sociology: a Global Introduction.
There will be a book sale in September for the students who wish to buy the books at a discount. Details will be given in class the first week of term.
This term's class will focus mainly on Chapters 8, 11, 12, 18, 19 and 20 from Macionis and Plummer's book. |

| Assessment : | FIRST SESSION
1. Continuous assessment: 4/20
- Students will have to take a number of quizzes in class during the term. (3/20)
- Students will also have to hand in one essay at the very beginning of December. Details will be given in class. (1/20)
2.Final examination in January (in two parts): 16/20
- Oral exam about two chapters from the course book, namely Chapter 10 "Class, Poverty and Welfare" and another chapter chosen by the student himself or herself. Students can choose any chapter that has never been studied in class or for the exam either in the second or third year, which excludes chapters 5 and 22, but not only. (8/20)
- Written exam based on the topics and all the language material dealt with in class. (8/20)
SECOND SESSION
- Oral exam about two chapters from the course book, namely Chapter 10 "Class, Poverty and Welfare" and another chapter chosen by the student himself or herself. Students can choose any chapter that has never been studied in class or for the exam either in the second or third year, which excludes chapters 5 and 22, but not only. (10/20)
