Course contents :  1. In-class course (60 hours)This course is based on the book "Market Leader - Upper Intermediate Business English. Longman". It includes the following:


  • Speaking and communication activities in business English: discussions, dialogues, role-plays, oral presentations, etc.
  • Reading comprehension of texts from the Internet or the British and American press dealing with economic- and business-related topics.
  • Quick revision of some grammar points and improvement of the students' command of the language.
  • Further study of business vocabulary.
  • Writing tasks: business letters, graph descriptions, etc.
  • Listening comprehension and speaking activities based on audio recordings dealing with economics- and business-related topics.
Course objective :  Improving the four skills, namely listening and reading comprehension, speaking and writing, in professional situations of the world of business and economics.
Prerequisites :  This is an upper-intermediate to advanced level business course. It corresponds to ALTE level 4 or Council of Europe level C1. The level required to take this course is intermediate to upper-intermediate, ALTE level 3 or Council of Europe level B2, which corresponds to the level of the Level-2 English course ("Anglais 2").
Organization :  The in-class course is taught to about 25 students for two hours every week. Students are required to prepare the exercises, vocabulary and texts from the coursebook every week. This preparation work varies in time depending on the students' previous knowledge. Regular work is essential as students are expected to participate actively in class discussions and debates.
Written notes :  Compulsory:
  • "Market Leader - Upper Intermediate Business English" published by Longman. The course book will be sold by the "centrale des cours" in HEC.
  • "Level 3 '2+3' Business English Course supplement 2010-2011", ISLV: available at Intercopy in Sart Tilman or rue St Gilles in Liège from September 20th onwards.
  • There will be a book list from which students will have to choose a book.
Recommended:
  • "Grammaire anglaise de base" (with exercises and key), ISLV
  • "English Grammar in Use" (intermediate) and "Advanced Grammar in Use", Cambridge University Press.
  • Dictionnaire ROBERT & COLLINS.
  • "Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English" or "The Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary of Current English".
  • "Longman Dictionary of Business English" or "Oxford Business English Dictionary";
Assessment :  1. Continuous assessment:
  • Exercises in class: graph description in the first term and a reading comprehension and a business letter in the second term.
  • 4 grammar tests to be done on the intranet.
2. Written exam: (10/20 in May for those students who were away on Erasmus in the 1st term). (4/20 in January and 6/20 in May for students who do not go away on Erasmus. For those students who do not pass in May there will be an extra section to the written exam in August).
  • Reading comprehension exercises based on an unseen text.
  • Vocabulary exercises.
  • Grammar exercises.
  • Writing exercise.
3. Oral exam (8/20):
  • Oral presentation in class based on one of the topics in the coursebook in groups (4/20).
  • 15-minute discussion about the book chosen for the oral exam (4/20).
4. Listening comprehension exam (2/20)The exam will take place in the lab during the last two weeks of class.

NB: The marks obtained for work done during the year count for both exam sessions in May and August.

Students have to take all parts of the exam in both sessions. The only exception is for the LC which counts for both sessions if students get more than 10/20.
