Required preliminary complements to register in the Advanced master in bio-engineering: sanitary engineeringFirst semester2,5
Holder(s) :  Pierre Latteur
Language :  French language
Course contents :  Elements of structures, historic, reflexions on natural phenomena. Discussions about existing structures. First steps relating to Stenght of materials. Machanical properties of materials. Actions on structures. Force and moment. Equilibrium. Modelization of supports. Internal forces M, N and V. Global degree of redumdancy. Calculation of trusses. Internal forces and force diagrams in beams. Geometrical caracteristics of sections. Design of elements subjected to normal forces . Stresses in the elements subjected to flexion, biaxial flexion and composed flexion. Shear stresses due to shear and torsion forces. The circle of Mohr. Laws of behaviour and rupture curves for different materials. Deformations and displacements. Buckling. Complements : Hyperstaticity and calculation of cables.
Course objective :  The course describes the basics of the strength of materials and elasticity. The course is a preliminary to other courses as Constructions processes (LT202) and stability of constructions (LT203).
After completing the course the student is expected to
- Easily deal with the basic aspects of Mechanics of structures and continuous media (all materials)
- Design and calculate elementary structures.
- Manage the basic aspects of the transmission of forces, stresses and displacements inside structures
Prerequisites :  -- MA102 - General mathematics (second part)
-- ME101 - Engineering mechanics
-- MA101 - General mathematics (first part)
Organization :  Lectures : 15h
Practical Works : 15h
Written notes :  1. ISSD : Interactive Software for Structural Design (www.issd.be).
2. Professor's notes (150 pages x 2 slides)
