Course contents :  The course is a short introduction to computer science aimed at students in life and earth science. The history of computer technology and the basic working principle of a computer are presented. Some basic concepts of programming are introduced using the programming language C/C++, and classical programs (spreadsheet, data analysis, ...) are used to demonstrate how a computer could help scientists to manage their data.
Course objective :  Topics of the theoretical course:
- Electronic logic based on transistors.
- Information in terms of bits and bytes.
- The working principle of a computer.
- The elements of programming in C/C++:
basic data types, elementary operations, algorithmic tools, functions
- Operating systems and some related software
Prerequisites :  None
Workshops :  Practical exercises on the computer will take place in parallel to the course. The schedule is available on the web pages of the U.Lg.
Organization :  This course is normally given in the spring term of the second year. It comprises 6 sessions of 2 hours each (usually wednesday morning).
The practical exercices are done in the computer rooms of the Department of Physics (rooms 4/15 and 4/34 of Building B5a).
The schedule of the course is available on the ULg web pages.
