Duration :  50h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
Master in Bio-informatics and Modelling, Research focus, 2nd yearToute l'année5
Holder(s) :  N...
Substitute(s) :  Pierre Geurts
Language :  French language
Course contents :  The students develop a software program for an application in biology. The details are defined individually for each topic, and will typically be structured as follows:
  • The topics (http://www.montefiore.ulg.ac.be/~piater/courses/INFO0114/projects.php are proposed by members of the faculties of science, medicine or veterinary medicine.)
  • Students work on a topic in groups of two or three. Each group contains students from different educational backgrounds (computer science, biology, chemistry).
  • Proposers of topics advise the students on the biological aspects.
  • Advisors for the computational aspects are designated from among the faculty members of the EECS department of the School of Applied Sciences.
Upon termination of the project, each group jointly prepares a report (http://www.montefiore.ulg.ac.be/~piater/courses/INFO0114/report.php.)

There are no class sessions.
Course objective :
  • Apply and reinforce knowledge in computer science and the life sciences by solving a practical problem in bioinformatics.
  • Exercise collaborative work with students from computer science, biology and chemistry.
Prerequisites :
  • Basic knowledge in computer science and biology/chemistry, and
  • profound knowledge in computer science or biology/chemistry.
Organization :  Proposed projects can be found online from the course Web page (http://www.montefiore.ulg.ac.be/~piater/courses/INFO0114/. At the beginning of the academic year, students initiate contact with the coordinator to organize the assignment of )topics (http://www.montefiore.ulg.ac.be/~piater/courses/INFO0114/projects.php to groups as well as the supervision in computer science.)
Assessment :  The final grade is determined under the following criteria:In addition, a demonstration of the software and/or individual oral examinations may be organized.

According to the respective contributions and presentations of the individual members of the group, their final grades may be different or identical between the members of a group.
