| Course contents : | Although the concept of "drive" can be seen in authors preceding Freud (including Schiller and Nietzsche), the course examines how, through Freud, it became a psychoanalytical concept in 1905 and how Freud progressively extrapolated the structure. The four "determinants" for drive will be set out in detail (source, object, pressure, aim), through their specific relationship to certain psychopathological difficulties. The course will then examine the writings of Jacques Lacan who addressed "drive", in order to specify how Lacanian writing sheds new light on the concept in question.
While the concept of "drive" today still raises questions, it is above all that of the "death drive" which some contemporary analysis reject, while others judge it indispensable. This is why this course will mention elements of this debate and will consider, by focussing on clinical psychosis, the extent to which it is with or without foundation. |
