Course contents :  Contents:
- Practical comprehension and listening exercises and note-taking based on authentic recorded material in UK English and US English. - Practical comprehension exercises in reading texts and styles with different content (press articles, chort sotires, novels...), summary, criticla comment, lexical, grammatical and cultural tools, introduction to essay writing.
- Practical exercises on some specific difficulties of the language to be mastered for practical use in the translation course
- Exercises on word definition, search for synonyms, antonyms and paraphrasing
- Initiation to Anglophone culture through the texts being addressed
- Optional, but highly recommended: weekly conversation tables in UK English and/or US English.
Course objective :  By the end of the year, students will be able to: - summarise and critically comment on texts with various styles and contents (to develop one's ability to synthesize, criticize and analyze)
- define certain words from the text, find their synonyms, antonyms and summarise paragraphs.
- understand authentic recorded material, pronunciation exercises.
- be at ease with the Anglophone vocabulary and culture required to understand written and spoken media (history, politics, economics, a range of socio-cultural material, news, ...)
-do research to understand the cultural references mentioned in the texts and listening comprehensions analyzed in class (to develop personal research skills)
Prerequisites :  good command of the English language, with the knowledge of grammar and vocabulary necessary to understand and criticize complex texts.
Good grasp of oral English as to understand authentic media supports
Workshops :  Participating in the origanisation of debates and oral exercises in class is compulsory.
Organization :  2 hours/week devoted to text analysis, debates and correction of exercises.
1hour/week: listening comprehension
Written notes :  La mise à disposition des notes de cours est laissée à l'appréciation du professeur. Les exercices de compréhension à l'audition (CD et notes) sont fournis par le professeur. La liste des romans à présenter à l'examen oral de juin est fournie en début d'année.

Assessment :  Personal homework will be collectively discussed and corrected in class.
Oral assessment in January: critical commentary on the texts seen in class. This assessment will account for 20% of the final grade.
Written assessment in June
- An audio comprehension exercise similar to those carried out in class (15% of the final grade). - Critical commentary + lexical exercises similar to those carried out in class + questions/exercises on the texts seen in class (40% of thre final grade)
Oral assessment in June:
students should individually prepare the books given by the teacher and the syllabus texts (25% of the final grade).
