Course contents :  This course will develop automatisms in finding relevant books and articles on any subject in contemporary history. Individual and collective research on a central theme varying each year will enable students to develop, in oral and written form, the basic principles of historical writing.
Course objective :  Foreign students are expected to master the French language first, as several papers and results of bibliographical research are to be turned in during the academic year and at the end of it. The first part of the course will develop automatisms in finding relevant books and articles on any subject in contemporary history; the second part will be individual and collective research (i.e. identifications, editing of sources, analysis) on a central theme varying each year, which will enable students to develop, in oral and written form, the basic principles of historical writing.
Prerequisites :  Working knowledge of French, both oral and written.

Reading capacity of English and, possibly, of Dutch.
Workshops :  Individual and collective research (i.e. identifications, editing of sources, analysis) on a central theme varying each year, which will enable students to develop, in oral and written form, the basic principles of historical writing.
Organization :  On Thursdays, 14-16, each week Q1 and every second week Q2.

Assessment :  Students will be evaluated on account of two written reports, in January (25%) and in May (75%).

Each note will be based on:

- the quality and accuracy of documentary research

- the ability of interpretating and summarizing

- proficiency in written French
