Course objective :  The aim of the course is to provide students with points of reference and the necessary methodological tools to develop a critical reflection relating to a series of 17th century Italian vocal pieces. The introduction will describe the conditions of production in which the composers active at this time evolved. The political, religious, cultural and musical foundations of the profane and sacred genres will be described and successively analysed in seminars: madrigal, opera, cantata and oratorio. Certain emblematic works will be the subject of an in-depth study.
