Course contents :  This course offers a survey of the major aspects of the art-historical research applied to the period comprised between the 15th and the end of the 18th century. It includes practical exercices in order to redefine and reconsider the most important methods and issues of the discipline (ekphrasis ; connoisseurship, the story of the Art History ; formalism ; contextualism) and a theoretical and historical approach of those trends as well. Finally, it encourages an epistemological assessment of them.
Course objective :  To provide students with an introduction to the various skills expected of a university art historian when called upon to analyse the history of modern art. To introduce them to major figures in the history of the discipline, as well as the main trends and to works which constitute methodological reference points. To encourage critical reflection and to lay the foundations for epistemological reflection.
Prerequisites :  Having followed the BAC1 and BAC2 courses on History of Art and Archaeology.
Workshops :  A considerable amount of personal commitment is expected of students. There are various exercises to be completed in class (description of works of art, stylistic and iconographical analysis, etc) as well as preparing and drafting a report at home on a work of art chosen from the Liege public collections. This report must include a data sheet and a prose commentary wherein students should demonstrate their ability to carry out thorough heuristic research as well as their summarising and analytical skills. They must also carry out a critical summary of a book and a series of extracts from texts dealing with themes covered with in class. Instructions concerning these requirements will be given during the first class.
Organization :  Alternating practical work and lectures. Lectures will be conducted by the course lecturer, Dominque Allart. Most exercises will be carried out in class. Preparation and drafting of the report (see above) will be carried out at home. Date for submission of the reports: 30 March. Written notes :  A portfolio of reaching and documents required for the course will be given to students during the first class.
Assessment :  The exam will cover all the material dealt with in class and issues raised by them in the texts provided in the portfolio of reading. The overall assessment will consist of the average of grades obtained for presentations given during the seminar, including the drafting of the report, and the grade given for the examination.
Contacts :  Students will receive information and useful documents for the course electronically. Meetings without appointment at the Service d'Histoire et Technologie des Arts plastiques des Temps modernes: Wednesdays from 1030 to 12 noon (Prof. Dominique Allart).
